LinkedIn:
7 Basic Tips

LinkedIn: 7 Basic Tips

LinkedIn already has 200 million corporate members. A huge source of potential customers, partners and other useful contacts.

But how to use LinkedIn in the most optimal way? How do I set up an excellent profile? How to even start with LinkedIn?

Good use of LinkedIn accelerates the growth of your business tremendously! Not self employed? You might finally find that dream job your looking for on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn has everything to do with personal branding!
Seven basic tips for setting up a good profile:

#1
Put a photo to your profile

A picture shows of confidence. Visitors can see the person behind the profile. For the best results use an image of 80 by 80 pixels. A headshot, no leisure photos, or pictures with your dog or kids. No logo. Your face is your brand!

#2
Optimize the links to your websites

In your LinkedIn-profile you can use up to three links to websites. You find this in ‘Contact Info’. Your business website, a personal website or your blog. Instead of using ‘Company Website’ or ‘My blog’ rename them. Give them a good, clear name so you’re better be found in the search engines and on LinkedIn itself.

Choose ‘Profile’ > ‘Edit profile’ > ‘Edit Contact info’
Click the little pencil next to ‘Websites’
Than choose:
in the dropdown menu ‘Other’
in the second box a good description of your website
in the third box the full url [including http://]

#3
Change the link of your ‘Public Profile’

LinkedIn gives you some meaningless link with your name and some numbers, like http://nl.linkedin.com/pub/stoffels-mirjam/9/804/43a

Select ‘Profile’ > ‘Edit Profile’ > select ‘Edit’ behind the link to your public profile
and make it a nice link like http://nl.linkedin.com/in/mirjamstoffels
Not only it looks nicer but your Linkedin profile will be better found in the search engines.
Use this personal LinkedIn link also on your blog, on forums and other social networks such as Facebook. And use it in your signature in your emails. All this is personal branding.

#4
Tell them why you are valuable

Explain under ‘Summary’ why you are of value. Write a sizzling text and explain why you and your business are valuable to the visitor. Always incorporate a ‘Call 2 Action’ in your text: ask people to link you, contact you, visit your website, leave a comment on your blog, to subscribe to your newsletter or something.

#5
Mention your work experience and training

But not everything from kindergarten! State that what is relevant to the work you’re doing now. Let this information help you to build your expert status!

#6
Make your profile visible when viewing others

Move the cursor to the top right, hover over your name and choose ‘Settings’.
Choose in the tab ‘Profile’ the option ‘Select what others see when you’ve viewed their profile’.
Then choose the recommended option ‘Your name and headline’.
Save your changes!

LinkedIn is all about connections. If people can see that you have viewed their profile, you show them that you accessible and open to connect. Probably they will take a look at your profile too. You never know what great connections arise here!

#7
Always be personal

Don’t use the standard invitations! Never! Always be personal. It’s all about establishing a relationship. Do you know each other already? Use the time to refresh your contact. Have you just met? Refer to the meeting and ask to connect. Make it a habit to immediately invite on LinkedIn after you have met and spoken to someone.

Someone accepts your invitation? Send him an email to thank him. In this mail you can also briefly touch what you are doing and how you can be of value.

Are you still not convinced that social media is going to stay? Do you doubt wether to use social media? Are you still one of the few that doesn’t see the importance of it? Here is an inspiring video with some overwhelming facts:

Thank you for stopping by, Lindsay!
If you want to start your own blog, WordPress is definitely the platform to choose.

You can start a blog on the WordPress.com website. Keep in mind that this blog will be outside of your website. If you want to start it like a pro, then download the latest WordPress version in your language and install this on your website. Then you can start blogging ON your website.
