Not Too Serious: 7 Lessons

Ihave a tendency to take myself a bit too seriously at times, especially when I get stressed, irritated, or scared. Most of the times this not only make me less effective in dealing with a difficult situation, it is actually the cause of the difficulty itself.

In these moments of taking myself too seriously, it’s easy for me to become self-important and to think that the weight of the world is on my shoulders. Or at least the weight of all my loved ones as I seem to be the only one who sees the chaos…

Be honest:
are you a member of this ‘Do you have any idea how important I think I am?’-club once in a while too?

 
When we take ourselves less seriously, we’re able to see the humor in situations, find the silver lining when things don’t go the way we want them to, and navigate through the ups and downs of life a bit easier. So here are seven lessons on how to never take yourself and life too seriously.

Always be the first one to laugh at yourself

Being able to laugh at yourself makes you an optimistic personality with a good sense of humor. If you can turn awkward moments, mistakes, and shortcomings into opportunities for a good laugh at your own expense, those things will hold less power over you. ‘If you can laugh at yourself, you can forgive yourself’ writes Susan Sparks, author of ‘Laugh Your Way To Grace’ in a blog post on Psychology Today. ‘And if you can forgive yourself, you can forgive others’.

Don’t be afraid to look silly

Stop beating yourself up. Overcome your insecurities and embrace your individuality. Give the gift of laughter to those around you. Don’t be afraid of looking silly!

Accept that it is okay to fail sometimes

Failure is inevitable. You learn substantially more from failure than success. Failure makes you stronger. Failure allows you to discover new paths and you will take more chances when you’re unafraid to fail. And in the end: failure makes success that much sweeter.

Worry less about being well-liked

When you’re comfortable not being liked by everyone, people will get to know who you really are. You can freely express your thoughts and it gives you power to say ‘No’ when necessary. It’s often the least popular people who strike the deepest chord in us. Be unpopular when necessary and push people to be their best. You just may save someone’s life.

Know that physical appearance isn’t everything

So often the most attractive people are the ones who know that their physical appearance isn’t the most attractive thing about them. Care enough for yourself to take good care of yourself, but know that your physical appearance is not the only thing great about you. And even if you’ll never be able to be completely satisfied with how you look, you don’t have to be to still be a beautiful person. Love yourself for everything inside you.

Don’t be afraid to get a little sloppy

Not entirely true, though. Time spent doing what you enjoy never is time wasted. And if housework is your thing, then go for it. However, for me, life is going by fast and it is too short to worry a lot about housekeeping… I love to create happy memories and savour these moments more than to worry about what the living room looks like.

Keep laughing through life’s toughest moments

Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them. Imagine all the wondrous things your mind might embrace if it wasn’t so wrapped up in your struggles. Always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. It is not what the world takes away from you that counts, it’s what you do with what you have left.

      You, as a laughter yoga teacher, know how healthy it is to laugh. But too often we forget to laugh about ourselves as we take ourselves way too seriously. I wrote this blog because I myself can totally relate to that…
