7 Promises to Yourself

Every day we make handfuls of commitments. We say we’ll meet friends for drinks or pick up the dry cleaning. We swear we’ll make it to the gym or call our grandmothers.

These are all great promises, but they all have one slightly negative commonality: they sound more like items on a to-do list than actual vows.

What if one day you woke up and decided to start living your life in a totally different way?

Life is not all rainbows and butterflies. It can be tough sometimes. You’ve already got this far, so the best option is to really make it count by moving forward from where you are.

Free yourself from the world’s negativity. Free yourself from the sources of ignorance telling you what you can and cannot do. Promise yourself to look ahead, to live ahead, and to get ahead. In other words, start making positive promises to yourself!

Make these promises to yourself, and keep them forever. Repeat after me: ‘I promise…’

#1
I will always notice how good life is

Celebrate and appreciate the life you have. Appreciate who you are today. Life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful. Count your blessings, not your troubles. It costs nothing to be positive, and it changes things for the better. By promising yourself you’ll look at the good side and being thankful for it, you’re automatically setting yourself up for joy.

#2
I will stop comparing myself to others

You have no need to see yourself as more or less than anyone else. Whether it’s your neighbors, celebrities or the people you see on reality TV, comparing yourself to others will usually leave you feeling inadequate. When you stop comparing yourself to others, the only person you’ll need to impress is yourself.

#3
I will speak kindly to others

Open your mind before you open your mouth. Don’t mix bad words with a bad mood. Just be calm and deal with your emotions first. You’ll have many opportunities to change your mood, but you’ll have an extremely tough time recovering the words you have spoken.

#4
I will speak kindly to myself

What are you saying to yourself? Are they the inspiring, comforting words you would speak to a friend? Or are they belittling remarks or negative assessments about yourself. The way you speak to yourself has a big impact on how you feel about yourself. So stay mindful, and ask yourself: ‘If I had a friend who always spoke to me in the same way that I am speaking to myself right now, how long would I allow that person to be my friend?’

#5
I will listen to my body and my mind

When something’s wrong, your body often screams louder than your minds, but you don’t hear it. It’s important to tune into the warning signs of physical and mental stress. That includes paying attention to out-of-the-ordinary symptoms like upset stomachs, tight muscles and recurring dreams. Make a promise to tap into those red flags.

#6
I will not let any situation steal my smile

Even when times are tough, take a moment to pause and remember who YOU are. Take a moment to reflect on the things that have real and lasting meaning in your life. And then smile about how far you’ve come. Anyone can be happy when times are easy. It takes a strong soul with a real heart to develop smiles out of a tough situation. No matter how long it takes, it will get better. Keep going. Tough situations build strong people in the end.

#7
I will treat myself with love and respect

When you love yourself, you treat yourself with as much love and respect as you would your closest friend. You will be understanding and forgiving of your failings and you will be as kind to yourself as you are to the other important people in your life. Self love is is a priority when it comes to a happier life, but it’s the habit we tend to practice the least. Make a vow to be kinder to the person staring back at you in the mirror.
