7 Lifehacks for Success

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog about living life without regrets. David Niven in ’100 Simple Secrets of Successful People’:

‘When asked to describe significant regrets in their lives, more than 8 out of 10 people focused on actions they did not take rather than actions they did.’

You want to be successful, but you don’t know how. So you read all about the success of other individuals. You got lost in the world of tips, tricks, and courses for success. None of them worked for you. At the end of it you are still left wondering ‘What is it that I don’t have?’

You’re still looking now. You’ve been through hours of listening to those motivational coaches say ‘Never give up!’ You’ve done it all, and nothing is working. You’re sick of it and you want something that you can start doing right now. You don’t want the ‘never give up’-speech again…

Here is the reality: success is something within you. It’s your daily habits. Your morning routines. What you spend your time doing. It starts in your mind, and from there your thoughts take you to your actions. Believing in yourself is a necessity! And beyond that, maybe these seven lifehacks might help:

#1
Practice emotional creativity

Emotional creativity, or empathy, is the backbone of success. To be able to relate, to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, is what makes you a successful human being. In business to be able to serve people what it is they want, you have to relate to their situation. And just as a general benefit, empathy makes you a better human being overall.

#2
Define your success by happiness, not by money

If you believe success is simply making [or having] a lot of money, you might be setting yourself up for failure. First, there’s no point to being rich if you’re not enjoying yourself. Second, you’re more likely to get rich if you’re happy doing whatever you’re doing. All your actions should be pointed at trying to become happier, not trying to become richer.

#3
Put more value on experiences in your life than possessions

Your life is too valuable to waste chasing possessions. Since the day we were born, we have been that possessions equal joy. Find more joy by choosing to pursue ‘better’, rather than ‘more’.

#4
Don’t buy into conventional wisdom

Conventional wisdom will produce conventional results. By definition, conventional wisdom is mediocrity. Following conventional wisdom means you’ll always be following the crowds. You’ll never be leading. You’ll always be doing things after everyone else as done them. You will be reactive, rather than proactive and innovative.

#5
Make family your number one priority

Making family priority #1 seems obvious in those moments of crisis [your child is sick or one of your parents needs help] than in everyday life. In our day-in, day-out life we often get caught up in the tyranny of the urgent. By dealing with what life throws at you, your family-life often goes on auto-pilot and you fall into daily routines with each of you doing your own thing. Stop that! Set aside time for those you love and create memories together.

#6
Keep learning

Never stop learning. Know what everyone else is doing, and what everyone else has done, and how they did it. Search wide for knowledge that might help you, and any inspiration that may do the same. Never think you have nothing to learn from others.

#7
Overcome the bad days

Even the most successful people have bad days, but only successful people bounce back. If your day is headed into a tailspin, remove yourself from the situation, ground yourself, and calmly determine what you have power over in order to turn things around. Grounding yourself has positive health benefits, and gives you an opportunity to look from the outside in on your struggles, which allows you to move forward and overcome even the worst of day.
