Simplify: 7 Tips

Do you wish your life could run more smoothly? Do you want a simple life? A life where time seems to flow slower? If you’re looking for ideas on how to simplify life, you certainly are not alone…

Like a roller coaster, life has its ups and downs. And while life may never be hassle free, it can be simplified.

A simple life has not the same meaning for every one of us.

For me, it means eliminating all but the essential, exchanging chaos for peace, and spending my time doing what’s important to me: spend time with people I love and do the things I love.

However, getting to a simple life isn’t always a simple process. It’s a journey, not a destination, and too often it’s a journey of two steps forward, one step back.

Here is a starter’s guide to simplifying your life in seven simple ways:

#1
Limit your communications

Our lives these days are filled with a never-ending flow of communications: email, cell phones, paper mail, Facebook, Skype, Twitter, and more. It can take up your whole day if you let it. Simplify by putting a limit on your communications: only do email at certain times of the day, for a certain number of minutes [I recommend once a day, before lunch time, but do what works for you]. Limit phone calls to certain times too [let your voicemail answer and call back when it suits you]. Same with any other communications. Don’t get caught in that rabbit hole called social media. Set a limited time schedule and stick to it [use a timer if necessary!].

#2
Say no to drama

Drama is exhausting. It can either be self-inflicted [like by overreacting], inflicted by others [friends venting about other friends], or inflicted by the media [drama about some catastrophe that might or might not happen]. Whatever the source of drama, it complicates your life by giving you plenty of new things to worry about and situations to deal with. Simplify and stop the drama!

#3
Limit your media consumption

The best way to end a lot of [media-inflicted] drama in your life! The information overload by all the media in our lives, TV, radio, the internet, magazines, can come to dominate our lives. Don’t let it. Simplify your life and your information consumption by limiting it.

#4
Learn what ‘enough’ is

Our materialistic society today is about getting more and more, with no end in sight. Sure, you can get the latest gadget, and more clothes and shoes. More stuff. But when will you have enough? Most people don’t know, and thus they keep buying more. It’s a neverending cycle. Simplify by getting off that cycle. Figure out how much is enough. And then stop when you get there.

#5
Find inner simplicity

Simplify by spending a little time with your inner self daily. This could be time praying or time spent meditating, or journaling to get to know yourself, or time spent in nature. However you do it, working on your inner self is worth the time. It will create a peaceful simplicity in the chaotic confusion of every day life.

#6
Single-task

Multi-tasking is too complicated, too stressful, and definitely less productive. Your brain simply isn’t smart enough to multi-task. All the brain is doing is going back and forth between tasks very quickly, giving you the illusion of multitasking. Simplify and do one task at a time!

#7
Learn to do nothing

Doing nothing can be an art form, and it should be a part of every life. We all know how to lay around and waste time. But many of us are too busy to do it much, and when we do it, our minds are often on other things. We cannot relax and enjoy the nothingness. Doing nothing can be a waste of time, or it can be an art form. Simplify by becoming a master in doing nothing. You’ll improve your life, the stress will melt away and you’ll be more productive when you actually do work.

This list might be too complicated to take on all at once. Don’t stress out about that. Just choose one point at a time, and focus on that. When you’re done with that, focus on the next thing.
