Happy Women: 7 Habits

H appy New Year! 2016 has arrived! The countdowns are over, the fireworks exhausted. Let’s shake off 2015 and start a fresh, happy year!

But what about happiness? What about those smart, happy women? What do they do that makes them always so happy? And so smart? How do they create so much joy in their lives?

Wouldn’t it be great if there were a simple set of instructions for living a happy life? Like an instruction manual for happiness?

Unfortunately, it is not that simple. But there are some techniques and tips you can use in everyday life that can help you find happiness as you go along.

Everyone has the potential to be, do and have everything she ever wanted. And so do you. Just like success is a habit, happiness is a habit. A choice you make. Every single day.

So here they are: SEVEN things happy women do…

Complain less, appreciate more

Write out a small list of the simple things that make you happy. Keep these little things constantly in mind and make sure you engage with them at least a few times a week. As you do these things be aware of the joy they bring you.

For example, at the end of the day I love taking my three kids to bed, having a little conversation with each one of them, asking them what they liked best that day. I also love a big mug of green tea or a cappuccino with a thick layer of creamy latte on top. What are some of your simple things?

Talk less, listen more

When you hang out with friends and loved ones, learn to listen more as they share. In conversation we spend our time too much thinking about how we are going to respond. Learn to love the spaces in the conversation. Listen. Take it in. Pay attention to what happens to your energy when you talk less. How much happier you feel as you conserve more energy.

Smile… a lot!

You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it here again: it only takes a few muscles to smile! You would be surprised how fast being cheerful to others can spread. A simple smile or kind word can spread like wildfire. Not only will you feel better, but everyone around you feels better!

Believe in yourself!

Sure, smart and happy women also have their doubts from time to time. Or have an occasional day where the only thing that seems possible is to stay in bed and watch reruns of Desperate Housewives! But on the whole, they are confident and secure in who they are. As they are.

And if that moment of doubt creeps up with you: state what you know to be true about your authentic self. Ask yourself: ‘What is true about myself right now, in this moment?’ For example, ‘I am loved’ or ‘I have what I need’ or ‘I am a smart person’. State this affirmation out loud a few times and take it in!

Turn off the TV

Step away from all the drama and turn off your TV. Rather than watch TV, use your time more mindfully. Read, walk, meet friends. Join an sports club or a class. Use your time to connect to others and yourself. Or go do something different, spontaneous, and wild!

Like people

You don’t have to love everyone you encounter, but learn to like people. Especially those who are different than yourself! Often you won’t agree with everything they do. And sure you don’t believe in all of their beliefs. Learn to get along with them anyway and you will open your mind up to change. And that is a critical trait. Absolutely necessary in today’s world.

Give yourself a break

Stop beating yourself up over things that happened in the past. Over things you did or didn’t do. Mistakes you may have made with others. Forgive yourself. Stop spending a lifetime living in the past, never making it to your full potential in the future. Give yourself a break and forgive yourself. And just as important: forgive others!

 
Forget about being Wonderwoman. Just be a happy woman who lives her life her way. End each day with a satisfied smile on your face. Life happens. Be a part of it!
