7 Powerful Life Lessons

Have you ever had an epiphany? One of those ‘a-ha’ moments where something just came together? Living through good and bad life experiences is the way you learn life lessons.

Maybe it’s something you’ve been struggling with for a long time, or maybe it was a piece of advice you learned from a friend. Whatever the source of our insight, it’s these moments that bring us to a deeper understanding of our world. The better understanding we have of life, the more we live in the truth.

‘Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood’
~Helen Keller

Below are seven of the most powerful lessons in my life, up uptil now…

#1
When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile

Chocolate… When I get my hands on some, it’s gone in seconds. It not only tastes fabulous, also chemically chocolate really is the perfect food. It supports the production of dopamine in the body, the chemical that helps us feel good. And eating chocolate increases the levels of endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killers. And since there is no ‘Chocolate Addicts Anonymous’ I developed my own 12 step chocolate program: never be more than 12 steps away from chocolate!

#2
Happiness is an inside job

Most of us spend our lives chasing after moments of happiness, without ever recognizing the possibility for genuine, lasting happiness. ‘If I only had this or that, if I met the right partner, have a big house, a new car, the job I’ve always wanted, then I would be happy.’ The most important characteristic of genuine happiness is inner peace. Real happiness lies within ourselves, and is not dependent on someone or something outside of us. Don’t let your life circumstances determine your happiness. Instead, your happiness will determine your life circumstances.

#3
Be grateful for what you have

An attitude of gratitude can literally transform your life. Concerted, consistent effort to notice and appreciate the good things in life, a morning meditation of what you’re thankful for, a bedtime counting of blessings, or a gratitude journal, changes you for the better on many levels.

#4
When in doubt, just take the next small step

Often the next step to take is so small that we don’t see it because our vision is focused too far ahead. All we can see is a giant, scary leap instead of a small, simple step. So we wait. And wait. And wait, as if the Master Plan will be revealed in a massive blueprint rolled out like a red carpet at our feet. If the future overwhelms you then just do the next right thing. That is all.

#5
Never be afraid to make a mistake

Mistakes. Everyone makes them. They are an essential part of that what makes us human. Mistakes are a crucial step in learning, growing, and improving yourself. The kind of mistakes you make define you. The more interesting your mistakes, the more interesting your life.

#6
Don’t take yourself [and life] too seriously

Are you a member of the ‘Do you have any idea how important I think I am?’-club once in a while too? When you take yourself less seriously, you’re able to see the humor in situations, find the silver lining when things don’t go the way you want them to, and navigate through the ups and downs of life a bit easier.

#7
What others think of you is none of your business

It’s their business. Wasting your time thinking about what they are thinking about you serves nothing. Seeking approval is a waste of your time and energy. It will only bring you suffering. It’s not about whether others approve of you but if you approve of you. This is what counts.
